Air disinfection

UV-C air disinfection systems play an important role in the beverage industry as they provide an effective method of reducing germs in the production environment. These systems use UV-C light with a wavelength of around 254 nm, which is highly effective against microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts and moulds.

Advantages of UV-C air disinfection systems in the beverage industry

UV-C light inactivates pathogens in the air and thus reduces the risk of cross-contamination in sensitive areas such as bottling plants or mixing areas.

Mould spores and other microorganisms in the air can contaminate and spoil drinks, especially those without preservatives. UV-C systems minimise this risk and extend shelf life.

UV-C disinfection is a chemical-free method that leaves no residue and is therefore perfect for the beverage industry, where the highest hygiene and safety standards are required.

Modern UV-C air disinfection systems are energy-efficient and can be integrated into existing ventilation systems without the need for major modifications.

The systems support compliance with international hygiene and safety standards (e.g. HACCP) and are a valuable component of modern hygiene concepts.

Typical applications in the beverage industry:

  • Filling and packaging areas:
Reduction of airborne germs that could get into the products during filling.
  • Clean rooms and sterile environments:
Ensuring an aseptic atmosphere in areas that are particularly susceptible to microbiological contamination.
  • Storage and cold storage rooms:
Prevention of mould growth and bacterial contamination that could impair storage quality.
  • Process areas with open product flows:
Protection of the product against contamination during processing.

Challenges and solutions

  • Shadow effects:
UV-C light is only effective where it can be directly irradiated. For this reason, systems are often designed to work with circulating air and thus reach all air areas.
  • Dust and particles in the air:
These can block UV-C rays. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the systems is crucial for optimum performance.
  • System integration:
UV-C systems can usually be easily integrated into existing HVAC systems, but must be dimensioned according to the requirements of the respective production environment.

Air disinfection

UV-C air disinfection systems offer the beverage industry an effective and environmentally friendly way of keeping production environments hygienically clean and ensuring product quality. They contribute to compliance with strict hygiene standards, reduce the risk of contamination and are a sustainable alternative to chemical disinfection methods.
