Frequently asked questions
General questions about Aqua Innovation
What does Aqua Innovation GmbH do?
Aqua Innovation develops and produces energy-efficient water treatment systems for drinking water, process water and special applications. These include UV-C disinfection systems, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, adsorption systems, ion exchangers, AOP reactors, complete systems and customised solutions. The systems are designed in Switzerland and used worldwide.
For which applications are the systems suitable?
- Municipal drinking water supply
- Food and beverage industry
- Pharma & Life Science
- Hotels, resorts, camping facilities
- Agriculture & Aquaculture
- Building and neighbourhood supply
- Ships & railway
- Off-grid installations (including seawater desalination)
UV-C disinfection
How does UV-C disinfection work?
UV-C light in a range of 254 nm inactivates microorganisms by Destruction of DNA/RNA. This will Bacteria, viruses, parasites (e.g. Cryptosporidium, Giardia) reliably inactivated - without chemicals and without changing the flavour.
What log reductions do modern UV systems achieve?
In Western Europe, certified systems typically achieve:
- 4-Log reduction (99.99 %) for bacteria and viruses
- 3-Log reduction (99.9 %) for protozoa
Aqua-Innovation systems are designed in such a way that they Standard-compliant doses ≥ 400 J/m² ensure.
Do I still need a fine filter despite UV-C?
Yes - UV treated No clouding agents. We recommend for optimum safety:
- Pre-filtration 5-20 µm, depending on the raw water
- For very contaminated water: Sand filter + fine filter + UV
Why do older Aqua-Innovation UV systems not have a current DVGW certificate?
The previously certified standard systems met all requirements for years. Through Changes to standards the certificate extension was not continued. The Successor products however, are again Certified according to the current standard. The Operational safety and effectiveness remain technically fully guaranteed, if maintenance and operating instructions are adhered to.
Filtration & membrane technology
What is the difference between filtration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis?
- Filtration (1-100 µm): removes particles, sand, rust, biofilm fragments.
- Ultrafiltration (UF) (0.02-0.1 µm): removes bacteria and viruses mechanically.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) (0.0001 µm): removes dissolved salts, organic trace substances, nitrate, PFAS, lime.
When do I need reverse osmosis?
If one of the following criteria is met:
- high Salt content / conductivity
- problematic Micropollutants (e.g. drug residues)
- Desalination of seawater / brackish water
- Requirements of the Food or pharmaceutical industry
How energy-efficient are membrane systems?
Modern pump technology, pressure loss-optimised hydraulics and adaptive controls make this possible:
- Up to 40 % less power consumption compared to older systems
- optional Energy recovery for seawater systems
Which filter cartridges does Aqua Innovation use?
We use high-quality cartridges from various manufacturers (e.g. Pentair/Pentek, Filtronix, Sati, ROM). O-rings, housings and cartridges are generally compatible, However, differences can occur in the Sealing profile or the Double O-ring design exist.
Advanced Oxidation (AOP) & TOC removal
What is an AOP reactor and what is it used for?
Generate AOP (Advanced Oxidation Processes) Highly reactive hydroxyl radicals, which oxidise organic pollutants. Areas of application:
-
- TOC reduction
- Reduction of Micropollutants (e.g. pharmaceutical residues)
- Improvement of the Sensors from drinking water
- Pre-treatment for RO systems
How much TOC can be reduced with AOP?
Depending on the raw water quality and process design 30-90 % TOC reduction achieve. Aqua Innovation uses optimised UV-C/oxidation processes with lower energy requirements.
Complete systems & customised solutions
Does Aqua Innovation also offer customised system solutions?
Yes, we are developing Turnkey water treatment systems included:
- Pumps, tanks, sensors, PLC control
- UV/UF/RO/AOP modules
- Container solutions, skid assemblies, special materials
Ideal for operators who Compact, ready-to-use system need.
Can systems be designed for off-grid or tropical locations?
Yes - our systems can:
- with Solar power,
- Salty, hot or particle-rich raw water,
- strongly fluctuating conductivities
can be operated in a stable manner. Components are installed in Maritime corrosion class delivered.
Certifications & legal compliance
Which standards do Aqua-Innovation systems fulfil?
Depending on the system:
- ÖVGW/DVGW standards
- SCC/EN 14897 UV standards
- Swiss food legislation (TBDG/W12/B1)
- EU Machinery Directive, Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)
- Electromagnetic compatibility: EN 61326, EN 61010, EN 60335
- Material conformity for drinking water (KTW, WRAS, ACS)
How do I ensure that my system is operated in compliance with the law?
Through:
- Regular maintenance
- Compliance with the operating instructions
- Documentation of critical parameters (UV dose, flow rate, turbidity, conductivity)
- Use of original or approved spare parts
Service, maintenance & support
How often do UV lamps need to be changed?
Depending on model approx. 8,000-12,000 operating hours.
The control unit indicates the ideal time.
Is there 24/7 support?
Yes - for contractual service customers Aqua Innovation offers On-call service, remote monitoring and remote maintenance.
What spare parts are available?
- UV lamps, quartz tubes, seals
- Filter cartridges and membranes
- Pumps, sensors, controls
Many parts are ex stock available for short downtimes.
Economic efficiency & operating costs
Are UV-C systems really more cost-effective than chlorine-based systems?
Yes in many applications. Advantages:
- No chemical costs
- No handling of hazardous substances
- No odour or taste impairment
- mostly Low maintenance effort
What are the typical operating costs of an RO or AOP system?
